Ever since childhood, I have had a curiosity for knowing what is lurking over the next hill. As a kid, I traveled between Milwaukee, WI, Mason City, IA, Cheyenne, WY, and San Diego, CA. Each of these destinations had its own magical qualities but, for me, the journey to these locations was the real magic. New and exciting landscapes. Different and interesting people and customs.
Before heading off to college in Los Angeles, I decided to see America and spent a good portion of 1972 and 1973 hitchhiking around the country. That was a life-altering experience, to be sure.
Rather than abate my wanderlust, however, it only increased my curiosity about different places to see in the world.
Throughout the mid- to late-80s, I was able to work in an industry which had me planted in the Philippines for a time. Later, I discovered the power of eclipse chasing. Next, I was able to find employment that required my traveling throughout North America and the United Kingdom. When I was afflicted by a couple of strokes in December 2007, that did not deter me from going past the garden gate.
I hope to never stop seeing what's around the corner.
And, I hope that these accounts give you a flavor of my experiences in these places. Some of these locations may or may not be foreign to you. I hope that I've done both the journey and people justice in my telling of these tales. Perhaps you too will feel that need to find out what it's really like on the other side of the hill.
Bon voyage!
